State fees at a glance

Form an LLC in any state

Every state sets its own formation fee, its own report, and its own recurring charges. This table puts all fifty states and the District of Columbia in one place so you can see where your state sits before you pick a service.

Lowest formation fee

Montana charges $35 to form an LLC, the lowest formation fee in the table.

Highest formation fee

Massachusetts charges $500 to form an LLC, the highest formation fee in the table. Recurring charges can change the picture, so read the full row before judging a state on the formation fee alone.

The full table

Recurring charges are shown in plain words because each state uses a different cycle. Some states ask for a report every year, some every two years, and some charge an annual fee on top of the report. A state page exists for each published state, with the filing steps, the agent rule, and the report rule for that state.

Formation fees and report fees come from state filing offices and were checked against the source listed on each state page. Recurring summary wording is a short version of the full rule on the state page. If a state has no page yet, it is listed here without a link until its page publishes, so this table never sends you to a missing page.

Which state should you form in

For most small companies, the practical answer is the state where you live and work. Forming in another state usually means registering again at home as a foreign LLC, which adds a second set of fees and reports. A low formation fee elsewhere rarely survives that second filing. Use the table to understand your home state costs first, then run your numbers in the LLC cost calculator.
